Keep holding the directional button opposite to the direction Mario is facing aswell.
DO NOT LET GO OF THE CROUCH BUTTON WHILE YOU ARE DOING THIS. After this, do a long jump and then press the directional button opposite to the direction Mario is facing. You need to find a place where the camera guy( Lakitu ) points the camera at Mario's face( if you can't find a place then you should turn the camera using the camera buttons until Mario faces Lakitu.
